Trail Building At Colorado Bend State Park
posted February 23, 2010
The weekend of February 19-21, 2010 was beautiful for being outside! The break in the weather was very nice! The ground was in good condition for trail building and Gorman Falls was at it’s prettiest for those who saw it for the first time… or even for who saw it for the umteenth time!
Our trail crew included the 11 people below plus a family of 4 who came in on Saturday morning and searched until they found us!

This month there are a lot of before and after pictures, some of which include mountain bikers riding the new trails.
Our starting place was here:

This trail was finished last month and was checked out by our riders again this month:

Here’s another section of trail from beginning to end:

And yet another one:

Our photographer especially liked this section of trail:

Here are some shots of our crew working:

“This is how you do it.”

A number of folks tried to get this rock out that was sticking up in the trail. They eventually gave up. This guy wasn’t going to let the rock get the best of him. He worked and worked on it and finally discovered why it had been so hard to get out. Talk about the tip of the iceberg!

Occasionally our trail builders find very interesting things as they work. This time someone found a couple of buzzard eggs! We look forward to going back next month and seeing if there are baby buzzards in place of the eggs!

Moving from trail building to one of the prettiest features Colorado Bend State Park has to offer – especially after some good rains like they’ve gotten recently: Gorman Falls. The hike there is definitely worth the effort!

There were two mountain bike groups: a beginner group and an experienced group. The experienced group of three started their ride at the Conference Center and met the beginner group at the Cedar Chopper parking lot.

The experienced group was hard for the photographer (on foot) to keep up with. They were riding so fast that these two pictures were all there were!

The beginner group (though not all of them were beginners) was a little easier to keep up with.

It’s not necessary to be a mountain biker to join this trail building team. You can be a hiker, or just enjoy being outside! We’ve discovered that those who love gardening tend to love trail building. If you would like to receive emails on when the next trail building weekend is, you can email TrailBuilding@aol.com and request to be put on the list. The official website for this project is at cbsptrail.com.
