Two Trails and a Cave in Arizona

posted June 17, 2010

South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona has some of the best mountain bike trails you’ll ever find in a city park. The following pictures are of Javelina, Mormon, Hidden Valley and a little bit of National.

Seguaro Bloom!

Occasionally it pays to get off the bike and look around. Found: a natural bridge, a cool big rock, and a tunnel (pictures taken from both sides)!

Think they might get cotton balls from a cotton ball bush? These still had some growing to do, but they sure did look like cotton balls! Desert plants are very interesting!

Mt. Eldon at Flagstaff, Arizona also has some incredible trails. Some are challenging, some are just fun. This is Rocky Ridge Trail.

This is Sunset Trail – very loose and rocky in some places, pleasant in others, with very nice views!

There’s still snow in places at the beginning of June.

Having a conversation with one of the trail builders/trail maintainers out working that day and one last pretty view. The mountain is Humphrey’s Peak — at 12,633 feet, the highest point in Arizona

If you are ready for a break from your bike, but still want to do some interesting exploring, Lava River Cave is a lava tube just outside of Flagstaff. Lava insulates very well and there was an ice formation just inside the entrance. The passage splits into left and right passages in the middle, and then comes back together before the end.
Going in.

The full ice formation from one side, and the back view from the other side.

Most of the passage is walkable, though there are times that stooping is required.

Family at the end of the cave.
