Beginning Road Cyclist Ride on July 29th

posted July 31, 2010

We had another great turnout for the Beginning Cyclist Ride this afternoon. Eight riders showed up to do the weekly Thursday ride in McGregor. We welcomed three new members to the group, Kirby, Wendy and Kathy. If you happened to not make it out to ride you missed another fun ride through western McLennan County. We rode 19.5 miles followed by our regular after ride social with cookies, juice and cold drinks. A great time was had by all and the group showed great enthusiasm learning to successfully navigate through three sections of gravel on Roust Road near Crawford. The group also learned to ride in a pace line into a strong headwind for the last 9 miles on our return route back to McGregor. We also want to send a big thank you to Alvis for coming to the ride for the second week in a row to assist Don as one of the ride leaders.

Members of the group left to right include Carlyle, Alvis (our faithful ride co-leader), Jeanne, Julie, Wendy, Kirby, Becky, and Kathy.

The group had a great tailwind down Old McGregor/Crawford Road toward Crawford.

New group member, Kathy, shows great form as a cyclist. This is her third time on her bike and she had no problems staying up with the lead group.

Doc Carlyle makes it look easy to get that vintage Schwinn to hum along at a fast pace.

The group takes a break midway into the ride off Plainview Road.

The lead group stops at Hwy 84 for the group to gather before returning to McGregor.

Below are two of our budding Triathletes and new cyclists, Jeanne and Julie. At the big Waco Triathlon last weekend, Jeanne (left) won second place in her division and Julie placed 5th place in her division. We are truly inspired by these two ladies. They are quickly becoming intermediate level cyclists.

If you are new to cycling and want to learn to ride effectively, please consider this as an invitation to join the Beginning Cyclists Ride Group. The BCR is designed as instructional based rides and are specifically designed for beginning and novice cyclists. All BCRs are guaranteed to be NO DROP rides. Rides meet at the McGregor High School parking lot facing the Bulldog football stadium every Thursday between 5:45 and 6:00 p.m. and leave the parking lot around 6:15 pm. All participants must wear cycling helmets during this ride activity. We strive to make these rides fun as well as an educational experience for beginners. We take various routes on all types of roads at a distance and pace that participants will feel comfortable. Prior to and following the rides we have social times for participants to get to know one another and have opportunities to ask questions about various aspects of road cycling. For more information, please contact Don Ickles, Ride Leader at 254/366-0410 or e-mail at dickles150@hot.rr.com.
