Hallsburg Bicycle Safety Event
For many years, the Waco Bicycle Club has rolled into Hallsburg Elementary School with one simple mission: make sure every student’s bike is safe, smooth, and ready to ride. This isn’t a small tune-up party either. History tells us we’ll be checking about 140 bikes, give or take a squeaky chain.
Hallsburg Elementary School Bicycle Safety Event
Usually in March or April
4:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Location: School gym
This is where you come in.
Rusty would love to hear from you, and the good news is that anyone can help. Whether you’re a seasoned bike wizard or just handy with a floor pump, there’s a job for you:
- Greet students and parents and check bikes in
- Help kids get their helmets fitted correctly (this is huge and surprisingly rare)
- Air up tires, lube chains, adjust brakes, and tackle other quick fixes
- Lend a hand to the more technically inclined folks when needed
Bonus points: they feed us. Real food. And the event is extremely well organized and deeply appreciated by the families at the school.
You do not need to be an expert mechanic to jump in. We always need help with basics like pumping tires, swapping flat tubes, and checking helmet fit. It’s also a great chance to sharpen your bike-wrenching skills, since several experienced mechanics will be on hand and happy to share knowledge. Overall, we’ll be checking for reflectors, tight hardware, working brakes and shifting, proper bike fit, smooth headsets, and good lubrication.
If you’re able to help on one or both nights, please let Rusty Hansgen know which evening and what time frame works for you. Reply directly to rustyhans3@gmail.com.
If you have them, feel free to bring a repair stand, bike tools, or a floor pump. We’ll also have a good supply of common repair parts available.
Directions:
From Loop 340, take Route 6 South toward Bryan/Marlin. Exit at Hallsburg Road and follow FM 3222. Hallsburg Elementary School will be about 2 miles down FM 3222 on the left. Head to the gym once you arrive.
Come help keep kids rolling safely and smiling all the way home.

Memorial Day Monday
Slow Rise on the Brazos
8 AM – Ride to West – about 50 miles
Group ride to celebrate Memorial Day, an American holiday, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. We will make our own parade – on bikes! Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season, which for us means Cycling Season, the best season of all!
2 Groups
Faster Group: 18-19 mph (regroup)
Slower Group: 13-15 mph (regroup)
